Current Affairs Webinar Series on Green New Deal (1)
- Climate Policy -
Background
Green New Deal, as recently announced by the Korean government, is expected to bring new momentum to both the economy and environment. The sets of policy would not just present future policy direction but also revitalize the COVID-19 striken economy. Korean Green New Deal is part of a larger ‘New Deal’ package that includes Digital New Deal.
According to the plan, South Korea aims to reach zero emissions by 2050. To this end, it would halt providing subsidies to coal power plants projects, and set the goal of reducing fine dust domestically 40 percent by 2040. The plan also includes establishing a training center to support workers transition to greener jobs.
Based on this understanding, CIFAL Jeju organizes two webinars on Green New Deal to discuss climate and energy policies in depth. Sharing different perspectives and interpretations on the Green New Deal policy package would allow participants to take stock of new development model and engage in future policy learning.
The first webinar on climate policy of Green New Deal will have geographical diversity that covers 1) the EU as an early adopter of the Green New Deal to share the lessons and challenges it learned, 2) Korea with its particular focus on air quality improvement, and 3) developing countries to identify opportunities to better adapt to climate change and implement localized green new deal. There will be a presentation on the Korean model of Green New Deal, followed by panel discussion on different models of Green New Deal (European model) and its potential application in developing countries.
