Environmental sustainability is defined as a responsible interaction with the environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources and allow for long-term environmental quality. It is inevitably associated with the perspectives on human needs and well-being. In this sense, environmental sustainability is mutually reinforcing economic and societal sustainability. In other words, it is essential to live within the earth’s planetary boundary so as not to jeopardize the ability for future generations to meet their needs.

As part of the global and local efforts to meet the human-ecosystem equilibrium, CIFAL Jeju/JITC organizes environmental workshops on a variety of relevant topics like climate change and green growth, carbon-free development, waste management, e-mobility, and environmentally sound technologies. Serving as a venue to share policy experiences and action plans, the Center joins the effort of the global community in moving towards a more sustainable future.

UNITAR Jeju International Training Center (JITC), in collaboration with UN agencies located in Incheon, Korea, organized an online Workshop on "Disaster Risk Reduction, Risk-informed Governance, Finance Mechanisms, and Innovative Solutions for Local Resilience" on April 11-18, 2023. The Workshop, attended by approximately 2,700 participants from 150 countries, aimed to address climate-induced disasters through sessions on disaster risk reduction concepts, IT tools, and local financing.

The Workshop was comprised of three sessions. The first session, led by UNDRR ONEA & GETI, focused on disaster risk and resilience planning, introducing tools such as the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities, and included case studies from Makati City, the Philippines, and Ulsan Metropolitan City, Korea and the MCR2030 initiative. The second session, facilitated by UN DESA/DPIDG/UNPOG, explored risk-informed sustainable development and governance, highlighting innovative technologies for disaster risk reduction and resilience.

The final session, delivered by UNITAR CIFAL Jeju, examined disaster risk reduction finance mechanisms. Presenters from the Asian Development Bank and the Green Climate Fund discussed financing strategies for disaster resilience, including the Risk Layered Approach and the global climate finance landscape. This session highlighted the establishment of the loss and damage fund at COP 27 and emphasized the "Early Warnings for All" initiative.
