12 November 2020, Jeju,
Republic of Korea – UNITAR CIFAL Jeju arranged a virtual dialogue webinar on “Protecting
and Empowering Youth Population for a Stronger Post-COVID World” on November 12,
2020 using the online platform “Zoom”.
The event invited 27 representatives from the governmental sector along with NGOs and International
Organizations. They came from eight countries including: India, Nepal,
Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
The event consisted of two
presentations by experts and a plenary session including Q&A. The invited
experts were Sara Castro-Hallgren, Programme Management Officer at UN Office for
Sustainable Development based in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, and Guillaume
Biganzoli, Junior Policy Analyst at OECD based in Paris, France.
The experts presented the
implications of the pandemic on youth population along with encouraging youth-led
socio-entrepreneurship, youth leadership, and economic activities through design
thinking. The expert from OECD shared a policy strategy named “National Youth
Strategies (NYS)”, as a vehicle for better strategic planning and principles of
the OECD assessment frameworks that NYS need to comply with. The participants shared
a country-based experience on the pandemic-stricken youth population and exchanged
lessons learned for better designing youth-related policy strategies. Both the
experts and participants discussed cases of innovative approaches led by youth,
the importance of youth participation in politics, how to reflect the needs of
youth on policy making, and how to carry out needs assessments and collect data
for developing policy strategies suitable for youth.
