UNITAR Jeju International Training Center (JITC), in collaboration with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, hosted the 2023 Jeju International Future Generation Forum (JIFF) in Jeju Island on November 24-26, 2023. The Forum featured over 60 participants, including youth from 13 countries and 26 cities, and local youth from Jeju. Activities included parallel sessions, roundtable discussions, and the declaration of recommendations, resulting in tangible action plans. Participants also explored Jeju's cultural and natural heritage through visits to sites like the old town of Jeju City and Geomun Oreum, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. These experiences enriched discussions on global issues and sustainable development, with a focus on achieving the SDGs.
The opening ceremony included performances, speeches, and the introduction of participating cities and the Youth Steering Committee. Distinguished guests included Governor Young-hun OH, Director Byung Hwa CHUNG, President Eel-Hwan KIM, and Consul-Generals from China and Japan, who emphasized the importance of youth-driven solutions to global challenges.
In preparation for the Forum, the Youth Steering Committee spent five weeks drafting recommendations and action plans on four global issues: Environmental Sustainability, Equality and Justice, Prosperity and Innovation, and Global Jeju. Expert lecturers, including Raj Kumar from IUCN Asia, Hyunjin Deborah Kwak from George Mason University, Sohee Yang of Beyond Imagination, and Jinju Moon from Jeju Free International City Development Center, enriched discussions on these topics.
The Forum concluded with the youth representatives declaring their recommendations and action plans, which included policies on expanding carbon taxes, resolving gender biases, investing in youth policies, securing SDG funding, promoting cooperation between islands, and enhancing Jeju's global branding.
