The Expert Lecture Workshop was organized by UNITAR Jeju International Training Center (JITC) in Jeju City on June 20, 2024 to explore how to utilize Design Thinking methodology, a creative social problem-solving process in real life. 

Two experts emphasized that when applying Design Thinking to address social problems, it is crucial not only to focus on user-centered solutions but also to look beyond the surface problems to identify underlying issues and their connections. Understanding the interactions with various complex stakeholders and determining the types and scopes of possible interventions are also very important. At the end of the sessions, participants were engaged with group activities where they gained hands-on experience with the Design Thinking process: empathize – define – ideate – prototype – test. So problems solvers are encouraged to repeat the processes of empathizing with users, defining problems, bringing about ideas and prototyping solutions, and testing them until they find solutions by consensus. At the Workshop, around 30 participants from Jeju Island gained insights on Design Thinking methodology.

UNITAR 제주국제연수센터는 창의적인 사회문제 해결 프로세스인 디자인 씽킹을 현실 생활에서 활용하는 방안을 주제로 한 전문가 강연 워크숍을 2024년 6월 20일 제주시에서 개최하였다. 

초청연사들은 사회문제 해결을 위해 디자인 씽킹을 적용하고자 할 때, 사용자에 중심을 두고 문제해결 방안을 찾아 나가는 것은 물론이고 표면적으로 드러나지 않는 근본적인 문제와 상호연관성을 정확하게 파악하는 것이 중요하다고 강조하였다. 특히 다양한 이해관계자간의 상호작용을 이해하고 개입정도와 방법을 결정하는것도 문제해결에 중요하다고 하였다. 참석자들은 또한 ‘사용자와 공감하기 – 문제점 확인 – 문제해결 방안 만들기 – 문제해결 프로토타입 개발하기 – 해결방안 실험하기’로 구성된 디자인 씽킹 과정에 대한 실습활동을 하였는데 콘센서스로 해결방안을 도출할 때까지 이러한 과정은 반복적으로 이루어진다. 금번 워크숍에는 약 30명의 제주도민이 참석하여 디자인 씽킹 방법론에 대한 이해를 도모하였다.
