Environmental sustainability is defined as a responsible interaction with the environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources and allow for long-term environmental quality. It is inevitably associated with the perspectives on human needs and well-being. In this sense, environmental sustainability is mutually reinforcing economic and societal sustainability. In other words, it is essential to live within the earth’s planetary boundary so as not to jeopardize the ability for future generations to meet their needs.

As part of the global and local efforts to meet the human-ecosystem equilibrium, CIFAL Jeju/JITC organizes environmental workshops on a variety of relevant topics like climate change and green growth, carbon-free development, waste management, e-mobility, and environmentally sound technologies. Serving as a venue to share policy experiences and action plans, the Center joins the effort of the global community in moving towards a more sustainable future.

UNITAR CIFAL Jeju organized a four-day international workshop on “Gender and Environmental Sustainability in the Asia-Pacific Region” in Jeju, Republic of Korea.

The workshop took place from 3 to 6 December 2019, and invited 15 participants working in the governmental sector, academia, NGOs and International Organizations. They came from 11 countries in the Asia-Pacific region including Bangladesh, India, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

Gender equity is essential in addressing major sustainable development challenges including the prevention of environmental degradation. In this regard, in the environmental sector, understanding the links between gender and environment and taking responsive actions at all levels can accelerate positive dynamics in promoting 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Thus, in order to have more inclusive and environmentally sustainable policies for the Asia and the Pacific region, it is important to understand the roles and capacities of women and to include gender dimensions in the policy making processes.

The workshop served as a platform to provide participants with opportunity to obtain a better understanding of the linkage between gender and environmental sustainability, and helped participants to make and develop specific gender-responsive practices, policies, and programmes that could help tackle environment challenges in their home countries. In addition, on the 3rd day of the workshop, an action plan was developed individually based on what they learned during the workshop.

Presentations focused on key topics including the linkage between gender equality and environmentally sustainable development; the importance of gender-sensitive approach; tools, methodologies and strategies used to integrate gender into environmental issues; and gender mainstreaming in environmental policy.
