Environmental sustainability is defined as a responsible interaction with the environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources and allow for long-term environmental quality. It is inevitably associated with the perspectives on human needs and well-being. In this sense, environmental sustainability is mutually reinforcing economic and societal sustainability. In other words, it is essential to live within the earth’s planetary boundary so as not to jeopardize the ability for future generations to meet their needs.

As part of the global and local efforts to meet the human-ecosystem equilibrium, CIFAL Jeju/JITC organizes environmental workshops on a variety of relevant topics like climate change and green growth, carbon-free development, waste management, e-mobility, and environmentally sound technologies. Serving as a venue to share policy experiences and action plans, the Center joins the effort of the global community in moving towards a more sustainable future.

Centre International de Formation des Autorités et Leaders Jeju (CIFAL Jeju) organized Current Affairs Webinar Series on Green New Deal (2) – Energy Policy. UNITAR CIFAL Jeju invited 25 participants working or studying on policies and projects related to Green New Deal (green transition) in governmental sector, academia, NGOs and International Organizations. They came from 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific region and East Africa including Bangladesh, Cambodia, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Pakistan, Tanzania, and the Republic of Korea.

As the second of the series, the Green New Deal webinar – Energy Policy invited experts who can address green energy transition from a policy perspective, the impact of green energy transition on the community and people’s livelihood in developing countries, and future implications of energy transition on industry. The three resource persons invited include Mr. David Wortmann, CEO at DWR Eco GmbH, Ms. Hye Jung Min, Energy Specialist at SEforALL, and Mr. Peter Lundberg, Head of Operations at Asia Pacific Urban Energy Association (APUEA).

Participants were given time to interact and get to know each other more during the Prep-session, while taking a further look at the topic from a pre-reading material which was shared by one of the invited experts. They were also able to share specific examples and learn lessons through co-developing Session Brief, a final product of the webinar. This Session Brief not just contains the summaries of presentation and discussion, but also features country cases that can provide a diverse range of stories to “How to ensure long-term perspectives in making and implementing green energy transition policies?”.

This virtual online event, with the Prep-session and collaborative Session Brief, aimed to serve as an interactive and effective learning opportunity. As the Green New Deal is a fairly new concept to developing countries in general, participants commented that the webinar helped them to identify leading examples in the region and narrow down the differences to adapt and implement the green transition policies.
