UNITAR Jeju International Training Center (JITC) hosted an expert lecture on the outcomes of the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) and their implications for developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region on February 23, 2024. Held in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023, COP28 underscored urgent measures to take to address climate crisis including climate adaptation agreements and their profound impact on developing nations. The lecture, registered to attend from 324 participants from 53 countries, was delivered by Ms. Juyeon Kang from the National Climate Crisis Adaptation Center at the Korea Environment Institute.
The lecture focused on outcomes of COP28, including the inaugural implementation of the Global Stocktake (GST) to evaluate progress towards the Paris Agreement objectives. It underscored the need for imperative response to achieve these objectives, as current targets would lead to a temperature increase of 2.1 to 2.8 degrees Celsius by 2100.
Concerning climate adaptation, COP28 introduced the UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience, laying out non-binding sectoral goals and policy cycle targets. This framework aims to gauge progress towards global climate adaptation objectives and advocate for comprehensive national adaptation systems involving assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and learning. The significance of adaptation within the UNFCCC is expected to increase, expediting the establishment, implementation, and monitoring of National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) with enhanced support for developing nations.
