Environmental sustainability is defined as a responsible interaction with the environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources and allow for long-term environmental quality. It is inevitably associated with the perspectives on human needs and well-being. In this sense, environmental sustainability is mutually reinforcing economic and societal sustainability. In other words, it is essential to live within the earth’s planetary boundary so as not to jeopardize the ability for future generations to meet their needs.

As part of the global and local efforts to meet the human-ecosystem equilibrium, CIFAL Jeju/JITC organizes environmental workshops on a variety of relevant topics like climate change and green growth, carbon-free development, waste management, e-mobility, and environmentally sound technologies. Serving as a venue to share policy experiences and action plans, the Center joins the effort of the global community in moving towards a more sustainable future.

UNITAR Jeju International Training Center (JITC) hosted a Workshop titled “A Pathway towards Decarbonized and Cleaner Mobility in Asia and the Pacific – Envisioning Green Possibilities of Public Mobility” in Jeju Island on April 30-May 2, 2024. The Workshop, attended by 17 participants from eight Asia-Pacific developing countries, aimed at advancing low-carbon and cleaner public mobility solutions in the region.

Participants explored various topics to promote low-carbon and cleaner public mobility. These include UNESCAP’s cleaner transportation policy in the region, locally-tailored strategies for developing public mobility policies, with a focus on the Avoid-Shift-Improve framework, opportunities for funding and financing, methodologies for drafting international climate fund proposals, public mobility and pedestrian-friendly urban planning, and case studies highlighting successful initiatives such as Korea's public mobility financing mechanism, Seoul’s public transport renovation and Jeju's 15-minute city initiative.

As part of the program, they visited the 11th e-mobility Expo held concurrently in Jeju in the same week and CFI Future Energy Center to deepen their understanding of Jeju's sustainable energy policy. These visits offered hands-on experiences and deeper insights into Jeju's sustainable energy policies and cutting-edge e-mobility technologies. Participants also developed green public mobility projects and detailed action plans tailored to their respective countries, leveraging the knowledge gained during the sessions.
