Tourism Development Workshop on Sustainable Tourism for Natural Heritage
Destinations
In
October of 2018, UNITAR’s Affiliated International Training Centre for
Authorities and Leaders (CIFAL) organized a 3-day workshop on ‘Sustainable
Tourism for Natural Heritage Destinations’ in Jeju, Republic of Korea. The
workshop was co-organized between CIFAL-Jeju, and ASEAN- Korea Centre. The
event took place from October 3rd to October 5th and
included 32 participants from 8 different ASEAN countries, and was held in
parallel with the World Leader’s Conservation Forum. The attendees from national
governments in ASEAN countries who wish to devise monitoring and evaluation
indicators to measure and compare project outcomes of targeted villages, or to
enhance their knowledge about relevant Korean case studies joined the workshop.
Countries represented
in the workshop included Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar,
Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The resource persons were: Dr. Natarajan
Ishwaran from International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and
Cultural Heritage (HIST) under the auspices of UNESCO; Dr. Kelly Bricker from
University of Utah / Global Sustainable Tourism Council; Mr. Wouter Schalken
from the World Bank Group; Mr. Mickel Ollave from Puerto Princesa Subterranean
River National Park; and Ms. Claudia Binondo from ASEAN Centre for
Biodiversity.
The lectures given
during the workshop covered the themes of natural heritage, sustainable
tourism, community involvement, as well as case study presentations from each
of the ASEAN countries present. The participants also took part in City-Share
methodology whereby they were encouraged to share best practices from their
countries and to formulate action plan regarding sustainable tourism and
natural heritage.
