Resilient Livelihoods of the Urban Poor during the Pandemic

from a Gender Perspective

7 October 2020, Jeju, Republic of Korea – UNITAR CIFAL Jeju organized a virtual dialogue webinar on “Resilient Livelihoods of the Urban Poor during the Pandemic from a Gender Perspective” on October 7, 2020 using the online platform “Zoom”.

The event invited 15 representatives from the governmental sector along with NGOs and International Organizations. They came from 5 different countries including: India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.

The event was composed of two presentations by experts, followed by a plenary session including Q&A. The invited experts were Lilian Mercado, Regional Director for Oxfam International Asia, and Maria Holtsberg, Regional COVID-19 Coordinator for Asia and the Pacific at UN Women.

The experts talked about how the pandemic has affected women in various aspects, for instance, unemployment, Gender-Based Violence(GBV), unpaid care work, limited access to reproductive health care, and so on. They also suggested solutions to some of these problems such as reporting system in place, redistribution of the care work amongst the family members, and the greater representation of women in policy making processes. The experts stressed that the gender-based policies to tackle the pandemic crisis have to be data-driven, and the data must be sex-disaggregated to address the unique needs of women, especially the marginalized women. During the plenary session, both participants and experts shared opinions and ideas on building a gender-just society and sustainable livelihoods for women. They discussed the continuous provision of vocational training and the role of local governments as front-line responders for sustainable livelihoods in the pandemic crisis as well.
