A Greener Tomorrow: Environmentally Sound Technologies for Sustainable
Development 5 – 12 August 2020
(Online) Background Technology
has profoundly shaped the economy, society, and environment. While it has
caused many social and environmental problems, technology helps to find effective
ways to tackle environmental challenges while addressing societal challenges.
It also leads to economic growth by increasing productivity and reducing costs.
In other words, technology feeds into all three dimensions of sustainable
development; economic development, social inclusion, and environmental
sustainability. The
promotion of environmentally sound technologies as well as the access to Science,
Technology, and Innovation (STI) has been recognized as one of the key means of
implementation of 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Indeed, numerous
innovations such as green technologies have been developed and spread around
the world at a rapid pace over the decades and contributed to addressing global
environmental challenges. In
Asia and the Pacific region, there are large disparities between countries in
technology and innovation. A number of low-income countries continue to be
challenged with respect to development and adoption of innovative environment-related
technologies. On the other hand, the Asia-Pacific region is a home to some of
the most innovative countries in the world. Technology flows, however, are mostly
dominant between developed countries. Thus, it is important to bridge the gap
by strengthening regional cooperation to enable technologically deprived
countries to take advantage of those technologies to mitigate the environmental
risks and to foster green growth in the region. The
2030 agenda for sustainable development emphasizes the importance of
international cooperation in technology and innovation field to achieve
sustainable development in all countries. A wide range of policy actions can
support technology flows, from the development of capacities on firms to the
design of trade and investment policies. In this regard, this online event will
help participants to raise awareness on the critical importance of policy in development,
transfer and adoption of environmentally sound technologies and technology
transfer. The workshop will also provide a platform for participants to share
and exchange their good practices and challenges regarding the access to
environmentally sound technologies. Event Objectives For
