19th
Youth Workshop
Shaping Peaceful and Inclusive
Cities of Tomorrow
17~24 August 2022
Background
Urbanization has been one of the most significant driving forces of recent
global development. More than half the world’s population now lives in cities,
and this proportion will continue to increase rapidly to reach 70% by 2050.
When handled properly, urbanization has the potential to create opportunities
for a better life, provide a pathway out of poverty and act as an engine of
economic growth. But while urbanization seems to be moving the global economy
forward, rising inequality and exclusion within cities can derail development
progress. [1] It often leaves the vulnerable population such as women, children, and
persons with disabilities (PWD), to face barriers in participation and quality
of life, ranging from having to face discrimination, violence, inaccessible
infrastructure, or limited access to basic public services. Poorly planned
urbanization has also resulted in economic disorder, civil unrest, congestion,
and environmental degradation, as well as increases in slums and sprawl. [2]
To make sure that tomorrow’s cities provide
opportunities and better living conditions for all, it is essential to
understand the concept of inclusive cities and shape them to attain long-term sustainability.[3] An inclusive city is defined as “a safe, livable environment with
affordable and equitable access to urban services, social services, and livelihood
opportunities for all the city residents and other city users to promote
optimal development of its human capital and ensure the respect of human
dignity and equality.”
When constructing infrastructure and services
in cities, going beyond the minimum technical standards for accessibility is
crucial. [4]There is a difference between being ‘accessible’ versus being ‘inclusive.
Access often puts emphasis on providing step-free, physical access. However, a
genuinely inclusive environment will provide equality of experience for
everyone. It takes into consideration that everyone has different needs and
that they are constantly changing, reflecting the wide range of abilities, age
groups and backgrounds, and embracing diversity and flexibility.[5]
In this regard, UNITAR CIFAL Jeju’s 19th
Youth Workshop aims to involve young people in shaping cities of coexistence and
peace. It will provide the opportunity for the youth participants to not only learn
about inequalities and challenges in current cities and good experiences through
lectures, but also allow them in teams, to exchange information and experiences,
and design their own innovative solutions to create a mindful and people-centered
city.
