A Greener Tomorrow:

Environmentally Sound Technologies for Sustainable Development

7 ~ 10 April 2020

Background

Technology has profoundly shaped the economy, society, and environment. While it has caused many social and environmental problems, technology helps to find effective ways to tackle environmental challenges while addressing societal challenges. It also leads to economic growth by increasing productivity and reducing costs. In other words, technology feeds into all three dimensions of sustainable development; economic development, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

Rio+20 World Summit, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2012, emphasized the crucial role of technology facilitation mechanism that promoted the development, transfer, and dissemination of clean technologies and corresponding know-how for sustainable development. In addition, the promotion of environmentally sound technologies as well as the access to Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) has been recognized as one of the key means of implementation of 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Indeed, numerous innovations such as green technologies have been developed and spread around the world at a rapid pace over the decades, and contributed to addressing global environmental challenges.

In Asia and the Pacific region, there are large disparities between countries in technology and innovation. A number of low-income countries continue to be challenged with respect to development and adoption of innovative environment-related technologies. On the other hand, the Asia-Pacific region is a home to some of the most innovative countries in the world. Technology flows, however, are mostly dominant between developed countries. Thus, it is important to bridge the gap by strengthening regional cooperation for the promotion of clean and environmentally sound technologies to enable technologically deprived countries to take advantage of those technologies to mitigate the environmental risks and to foster green growth in the region.

The 2030 agenda for sustainable development emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in technology and innovation field to achieve sustainable development in all countries. A wide range of policy actions can support technology flows, from the development of capacities on firms to the design of trade and investment policies. In this regard, this capacity building workshop will help participants to raise awareness on the critical importance of the development, transfer and adoption of environmentally sound technologies and on the effective forms of partnership as well including South-South and triangular cooperation in the technology transfer. The workshop will also provide a platform for participants to share and exchange their best practices and challenges regarding the access to environmentally sound technologies to strengthen their policies to support technology transfer as well as technology development.
