UNITAR CIFAL Jeju held the international capacity-building Workshop under the title of “Culture as Powerful Fuel for Building a Sustainable City” from July 31 to August 4, 2023 in Jeju Island. The Workshop was sponsored by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and held in cooperation with UCLG ASPAC.  

The Workshop gathered 30 participants in person who are involved in the field of culture and urban development from the Asia-Pacific region, representing 11 countries (Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Republic of Korea). The Workshop also enabled online participants to benefit from all the lectures. The Workshop touched upon various topics related to the role of culture as an enabler to revitalize cities. It took stock of trends in cultural engagement and implications for inclusive urban development, urban regeneration and local development based on local culture, and participatory urban governance with local culture, whilst promoting an interconnection between culture, city, tourism, and UN SDGs.

The Workshop also highlighted the successful stories of both Seogwipo in Jeju as a designated cultural city and Sehwa village as an exemplary participatory governance model. Along with the experts’ lectures, participants were engaged in group works with case study presentations and action plan development exercises while sharing their ideas and best practices for further collaboration in the future. During the Workshop, participants also observed the cultural and historic significance of old town in Jeju city and Haenyeo Museum.

 

UNITAR 제주국제연수센터는 제주특별자치도와 함께 ‘문화: 지속가능한 도시 조성을 위한 발전 동력’을 주제로 금년 7월 31일부터 8월 4일까지 제주도에서 정책역량 국제워크숍을 개최하였다. 금번 워크숍에는 우리나라를 포함한 11개 국가(방글라데시, 중국, 인도, 인도네시아, 몽골, 네팔, 파키스탄, 필리핀, 스리랑카, 베트남)의 문화 및 도시발전 분야 전문가 30명이 대면으로 참석하였으며 온라인으로도 강의참석을 가능케 하였다.

참가자들은 문화가 도시 활성화 또는 재생에 어떻게 긍정적으로 기여하는지 세계은행, UNESCO의 시각, UN SDG와의 연계성, 아시아 국가사례 및 우리나라 특히 제주도 사례를 학습하고 자국의 성공사례도 공유하는 기회를 가졌다. 아울러 제주도 서귀포시의 문화도시 지정사례, 세화마을의 참여적 주민자치 성공 사례를 배우고, 제주시 원도심과 해녀박물관 방문을 통해 관련 문화적, 역사적 의미를 이해하는 시간을 가졌다.
