on Making a Results-based Monitoring
and Evaluation System
Work for SDGs
14 & 15 December 2021,
Jeju, Republic of Korea – UNITAR CIFAL Jeju organized a virtual workshop on “Making
a Results-based Monitoring and Evaluation System Work for SDGs” on 14 & 15 December
2021. The event invited 103 representatives, mostly UNITAR CIFAL Jeju alumni,
from the governmental sector along with NGOs and Academia. They came from 12
countries including: Philippines, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Pakistan, India,
Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Fiji, etc.
The workshop provided
the participants with a learning opportunity where the invited speakers, Booyuel
Kim (Seoul National University), Jinkyung Kim (Korea International Cooperation Agency),
Seungyeun Hong (Yonsei University), and Jaeeun Shin (Seoul National University)
shared extensive expertise on what results-based monitoring and evaluation
means and how it can contribute to accelerating the Sustainable Development
Goals, and working knowledge on how to utilize and implement such systems. Six UNITAR
CIFAL Jeju Alumni were also invited to present their action plans developed in previous
workshops to share their experience and receive professional insights from invited
experts.
The invited experts put
an emphasis on the importance of utilization-focused evaluation. Rather than focusing
on solely executing an evaluation, continuously building internal capacity and organization-level
monitoring and evaluation frameworks that focuses on utility and actual use of the
evaluations was stressed. In result, participants were able to gain insight on how
to sustain and monitoring and evaluation system within their own communities. Also,
with alumni’s presenting their own action plans and receiving expert feedback, participants
were able to learn about M&E in varying contexts.
