The International
Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Jeju (CIFAL Jeju), with the
partnership of CIFAL Newcastle, held the 14th Youth Workshop on Youth
Engagement for Sustainable Consumption and Production from 10 to 12 July 2019
in Jeju. The workshop gathered students from different backgrounds and
nationalities: 20 students from the Universityof Newcastle in Australia,
and 27 Korean and International students enrolled in various universities in the Republic of Korea.
The main goal of this
workshop was to raise youth awareness and advocacy on Sustainable Development
Goals, in particular on the SDG 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”, by
for instance analyzing their footprint and looking into ways in which disaster
resilience fit into the SDGs.
The second day was
devoted to a field trip for illustrating the current production and consumption
management in Jeju with the visit of the Sustainable Environmental Education
Center Landfill for studying how waste product and food waste are treated and
recycled. Participants also learned more about renewable energy at the Korea
Institute of Energy Research.
At the end of the workshop, the participants
presented impressive
action plans based on SCP and other SDGs by demonstrating many alternatives
within everyone’s reach to have a more eco-friendly life. This event was an
excellent opportunity for young people to broaden their knowledge and was also
an essential occasion to shape them into future leaders.
